Mission

The mission of the Brain Health USA - Van Nuys Psychiatry Residency Program is to provide high-quality education in the field of psychiatry. This program combines diverse clinical exposures, comprehensive approaches to patient care, and research to ensure our graduates are proficient and ready to serve the Los Angeles community. We provide residents with the education, supervision, and systematic assessments required for them to become knowledgeable psychiatrists and medical leaders in the community, while also preparing them for board certification with the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology (ABPN).

Training Sites

Serving Our Community

Resident training takes place across multiple affiliated sites and gives residents experience with a wide range of patients and clinical settings, including but not limited to

Core Inpatient Site

Pacifica Hospital of the Valley

This safety-net hospital serves as a core inpatient psychiatry training site for residents managing adults with acute psychiatric illness. Clinical experiences include diagnostic evaluation, psychopharmacologic management, and interdisciplinary treatment planning.

Primary Outpatient Site

Brain Health – Van Nuys

This site serves as an outpatient psychiatry training location, where residents will provide longitudinal psychiatric care. Residents will manage patients and develop competencies in medication management, psychotherapy, and continuity of care.

Community Psychiatry

Brain Health – Gardena

This site serves as a community-centered environment, where residents will provide care to diverse and underserved populations. Training emphasizes culturally informed psychiatric assessment, treatment planning, and the development of culturally attuned approaches to mental health.

Outreach Psychiatry

Brain Health USA - DMH

This site serves as a field-based training location through Brain Health USA's collaboration with the Los Angeles County Department of Mental Health. Residents may elect to receive intensive field training, gaining exposure to a range of clinical presentations and coordination with community stakeholders.

Curriculum & Training

The curriculum provides a broad foundation of knowledge and skills, with increasing responsibility as residents progress. Residents gain exposure to Primary Care and Neurology, as well as Psychiatry in both inpatient and outpatient settings. Subspecialty rotations include Forensic, Addiction, Geriatric, Community, Administrative, Consultation-Liaison, and Child and Adolescent Psychiatry.

Research & Scholarly Activity

Each resident is paired with a faculty research mentor and is required to complete a scholarly project. Residents may explore any area of scholarly interest in Psychiatry. The program actively encourages research and offers funding for residents to present their work at regional and national conferences. Topics of interest include:

  • Community Mental Health: Health equity research and population-level outcomes
  • Crisis Intervention: Mobile outreach models and emergency psychiatry
  • Cultural Psychiatry: Treatment disparities and culturally informed care
  • Quality Improvement: Enabling system-based change to enhance patient outcomes and optimize clinical workflows

Faculty

Our faculty are experienced clinicians committed to teaching, mentorship, and the professional growth of every resident. Residents work directly with faculty throughout their training, in clinical rotations, didactic instruction, and on scholarly activity. The program maintains a strong faculty-to-resident ratio, ensuring close supervision and individualized mentorship across all training sites.
